Jackie- final week submission

Hi everyone, here is my final submission for this term- I've tried to tackle the notes about her movement around fr 145, that we were discussing on the blog, her hitting a wall in some places, I've added some secondary movement/ keep alive on the dragon's feet and arms/ pole. I've started to polish up the rough patches a bit (it helped to take a week off because now I can see some of that stuff a bit more). I've also changed the second shot blocking, to reflect Victor's acting notes from the week 11 class. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks for an awesome class everyone, and I'll see you in the fall! Jackie

Viv – "Don't Like You Anymore" WIP

Download Link

I've covered most of the notes I received last class.  I'm certainly still going to work on this before class tomorrow evening.  I'm mostly curious if the speed/timing for the glance up around 260 and the turn away at the end work.  Thanks for the comments and feedback!

Viv – "Burn You" WIP

Download Link

I've addressed all the notes I received last time for this shot (I can happily list the notes if needed).  I'm still not entirely happy with the expression change around frame 160.  I'm not sure if it still gets lost due to his body movements, so perhaps I should shift the expression change a few frames earlier?  I like the timing of him standing up and placing his hands on the desk, so I'd rather not delay/speed those up unless it's necessary.

Let me know what you guys think.  Thank you and have a great 4th of July!

Benoit - New pass

Hi guys!

Here is a new pass where I:
- Simplified the begining,
- Sharpened the transitions,
- Start blocking the blue guys.

I'm still working on it, but any comment is welcome.

Thank you!

Jackie- tackling the C curve reversal note

Hi everyone, here I've addressed the note about taking out the C curve reversal pose around frame 131. I've tried to drift her from the pose at 120, into the pose at 163. I'm a bit confused about the direction, because I would think she'd still need to drift back with the "ok" hand gesture, to give her somewhere to go to fr 163. I've left the body movement back to screen left, around fr 125, and I've also left in a bit of the bend on the chest, neck and head. Is this working any better? Thanks and have a great weekend! Jackie

Hi Guys!
This is my new version.
Thanks!

Jackie- video reference

Hi guys, here is video reference I've done for shot 2 of my project; I'm going to focus on this shot for the last bit of this class. I can get to shot 3 in the fall. Let me know if you have any thoughts; I think take 3 is best. Sorry for the format problem.  cheers, Jackie

New Shot Layout

Hey everyone! Back from the mystical land of NJ and I wanted to upload the new layout for my shot - having trouble keeping girl Malcolm in the frame in the beginning. I also worry about them looking out of proportion since Malcolm is so horribly tall and skinny and other models I've found are short and fat. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Visit to Pixar

Hey Victor!
I was thinking about if possible, we could have a opportunity to go visit the Pixar studios with you.
In my case, i'll be going back to Brazil very soon, and don't know if also the rest of the crew will have a opportunity like that again.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Malcolm - IK/FK Switch

Anyone had luck with FK to IK switching on Malcolm? I tried using the switch that comes with the GUI but it lines up the wrist all funny, just wondering if there was a trick to it I'm missing. Thanks!

Viv – Dialogue #2 Options

Here are my dialogue options for the next piece.  There's no rush for feedback on these– at the most I will do a layout pass for this scene since I should still concentrate on my previous dialogue.

While some of these are a bit lengthy, particularly the last clip, I have some ideas on how to cut them down.  For example, clip 5 could be cut around 17 seconds, so it starts with "You were right", making it only about 7 seconds long.

I may look for additional dialogue clips depending on what you guys think of these.  My goal was to find some clips with some strong, tearful emotion.  While I wasn't necessarily aiming to find tragic or gloomy scenes, these were the best dialogue clips I found so far.  If anyone has suggestions for similar clips please let me know.

Mallo 8 sec clip new attitude poses.

Hey Guys!
I've changed the attitude pose at second part of dialogue. I'd like to know if this time i'm going in the right direction before to get the shot in spline.
Thanks!

Tonight's class

Hi Victor,

I'm sorry, but some unforseen events happened at work today and I'm not sure I'll make it tonight. So here is what I originaly planed to show tonight:
  • LINK - The last version of my shot. I changed the end a little bit and add some extra facial animations (brows rise and blink) so it reads more. I also reduced (almost removed) the arm move so it's not stealing the attention from the face.
  • LINK - This is an idea for my new assignment. I imagined something in 2 parts:
    • The 1st one, with two characters facing for a fight (as in a fight video game). The first character is tough, very cocky and ready to fight. The second character (tough as well) is totally girly. This character acts and hits like a woman which surprises the other one who gets slapped and knocked out.
    • In the second part we realized that it was a grandmother / mother playing a video game with her grand son. Then she says the line while standing up and turning the tv off.

Thank you and sorry again if I can't make it tonight.

Benoit - Few fixes

Hi there,

Here is the last version of my shot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r9ys7t7ln6lv0db/benoit_clintEastwood_04.mov
I addressed Victor's notes but I am still struggling a little bit with the final attitude. What do you think?

Thank you!

Fixes

Hi Everyone!

So I think I've addressed all the notes from last class - with the exception of the breath she takes after "thursday". If I have her breath in, it destroys her mouth position or makes her body look like it's having a mini-seizure. I think I might just be doing it wrong. Any ideas? And I'm going to animate the hair next since I've pretty much nailed the body down. Thanks everyone!

Jackie- more progress

Hi everyone, Here's more progress; I've tried to address Victor's notes about the end, and I haven't started offsetting/ overlapping anything yet. On the girl, I'm trying to communicate a snooty/ snobby attitude. Is it reading? As always, I'm open to vetoes on anything, even though I'm working in spline. Thanks for viewing!

Progress So Far

Hi guys! Just wanted to upload my progress so far - I was looking for some feedback on her expression at "Thursday" - I followed Victor's drawing but now I don't know if it feels too pushed or if the expressions after it are just too bland. Advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Jackie- dragon and girl; better?

Hi everyone, I've tried to address Victor's note that I don't need the dragon's hand gesture at the end, I just have to work with the contrast in the body and head. Is this part reading? I've also tried to fix the last gesture on the girl; the consensus was to have her gesture a bit about herself, opening up a bit and looking up a bit, but keeping it small. I've also toned down the bucket because I've gotten repeated notes that it's moving around too much. Thanks for looking and thanks for any feedback!

Jackie- addressing dragon notes from last night

Hey guys, here is my attempt to address the notes from last night on the dragon. I fixed the body pose and flopped the hands/ pole. I changed the first part and I now have him looking over at fr 39. Is his face appealing enough? For the sharp look down around fr 130, I drop his brows a bit because I raised them a bit on the look over. Is this working, or should I raise the brows on the sharp look down? For the end, does this gesture read? Is the face communicating properly? I tried to go with Yatska's suggestion to have him do a more 'haughty' gesture. I'm not sure about the hand pose. I'm also not sure if this gesture is appropriate for him to do because he has to keep one hand balancing the pole on the dock. It is nice because it's going to end up slightly mimicking her gesture. Anyway, thanks for looking!

KVlk - Blocking First Pass - Royce

Hey, Victor. This was my shot from last week. I am finishing up the new version for tonight (this is the old one from last week). Royce's notes were: - Block in the emotion on the face (eyes, brows) - Add in some subtle breathing in the beginning to make him 'alive' - Transition into a big breath before he turns - Turn him a little earlier to it hits on the 'ive' of the phrase 'give me something' - Zoom the camera in, bring the chair and him more into the middle - Turn his body towards camera more once he turns so he is looking just off camera - Drop him into the chair on the big breath after his 'My GOD MAN, I'm...) - Lots of internal thinking, release of tension for when he is finally seated before he delivers the final line See you tonight with the revised blocking!! Thanks!

Yatska refining last assignment acc. Royce's notes

Hello Victor and my classmates!
Here my last scene with very dangeros old woman. )))
This are Royce's notes + Ben's note, which I try to do all as better as I can.
1. Think about spacing, because all movement is very smoothly.
2. at fr. 107 will do overlap  - not move the same time for the head and arms
3. at fr. 81 "you have always been...." her head should move from point A - B - C, don't return her head to the first point A - this is not right - A - B - A. Don't do that.
4. Her shoulders should move more sharper at the begining - move up sharper and quicker.
5. Her mouths movement will do more sharper too.
6. at fr.191-229 think and do about albow, arm and body's movement - how weight work at this moment.
Many thanks!
can't wait to see you all, particular our teacher Victor!

Dana - Week 4 - No changes since class

Hey Y'all, This is just what I showed in class last week, playing catch up this week so I'm still working on revisions - will post a new version addressing the notes tomorrow/show in class!
Royce's notes were:
-Open the shot up in the beginning to give him more time to reflect and get to the milk before he says his first line.
-The timing and spacing felt even in the middle, particularly the arm swinging down after it grabs the milk.
-There was too much movement in the chest for the door close - redistribute it to the root.
-Start the first pose more relaxed.
-Arc the arm that slams the door.
Thanks!

Jackie- addressing Royce notes on dragon

Hi everyone, here is my first attempt at addressing Royce's notes on the dragon. The consensus was to have the dragon act more tough/ thuglike, but I think the idea of him being kind of jolly is funnier, so I tried to go for a compromise. There was a note on the blog to have him hold the pole with one hand, but in real life you can't fish without two hands on the pole. At least deep sea fishing like I'm used to. I just put the "princess" into spline, so I'm not looking for feedback on her yet. Thanks for looking!

Lauren Week 4 Blocking

Here's my blocking from last week. Thanks!

Jackie- recent version and notes from Royce

Hi everyone, here is my shot as is currently. I've worked on Victor's notes to tone it down because it goes along with some of Royce's notes. To paraphrase Royce's notes; -push the idea in shot 1 more. Have her more in her own world while swinging around. Have her not look at him at first while he's talking. Have her look at him first when she starts talking. -"I'm a princess"- nice. -stay at 116 pose, then shift weight over right before "Prince." -dragon is too chipper, have him more thug-y and direct. Sell thug-y attitude more. Less smile and more slouch. -cameras looking good. shot 3: twist away/ lean towards him, shift weight towards him.

I'm back - what did I miss?

Hi Class,
I would love it if you could post the work that you showed to Royce last week, along with the notes you received.  That way I can get up to speed before this Thursday.  See you then!

Kevin Vlk: Test 2 Revised

Hey, all. I revised my 3 second test shot based on Victor's notes: I increased the intensity significantly, fixed some of the posing and added the eye darts. I felt that the shot was just trying to fit in too much in 3 seconds to get it to read, so I put back in the original cut of the line which made it about 5 seconds. There is about 40 frames of new animation at the beginning to accompany the longer dialog. This is not polished. Looking for notes on timing, movements and phrasing. Royce did not see this shot as it is so my notes came from classmates and Victor. Thanks!

Saturday, May 11, 2013

Hey everyone! Here's my revised blocking after Royce's notes. I unfortunately scribbled a bit too much and couldn't understand all of them, so I wanted to get out a revised blocking asap to make sure I'm on the right track. The splines need major work because of all the moves I took out, but like I said it's just blocking. I'll keep working on it, but feedback would be great. Thanks!

Jackie- revisions on girl

Here is my first pass at Victor's notes from thursday. I've tried to tone down the girl's actions, and have her mostly looking at the dragon. I did get a note from Royce on thursday, that in the beginning, she should be spinning around more to herself, more facing screen right. I've also tried to address this. Everything else I haven't gotten to yet, but I was just wondering if what I did do reads any better. Thanks for looking!

Jackie- new rough blocking and new reference

Hi folks, here is my rough blocking, followed by the video reference I'm using. I had to do this in reverse order, that is, I had to shoot reference, work in maya, then shoot revised reference again a few times. I'm still open to vetoes, but hopefully by now I have the shot visualized enough that if need be I can shoot more reference, then go into maya. Thanks for looking and thanks for any feedback! see you all in class!

Have you guys played with Morpheus rig? I'm trying to find the Lips roll control, but i can't. Thanks!

Jackie- new layout

Hi folks, here is my proposed new layout for my project. I haven't really touched the poses since last night, so I don't think any of these poses are final for blocking. Right now I'm trying to finalize the cameras and spatial relationsships between the characters. Please let me know if this is working any better. Thanks!

Jackie- Jane rig extra controls for Benoit

hi everyone, This is for Ben, for the Jane Rig. Assuming you haven't changed the namespace, when you open up [jane_rig:jane], open [:jane_controls], then open [:jane_face_scuplts]. You will see [:jane_eyebrows_sculpts], [:jane_eyelids_sculpts], and [:jane_mouth_sculpts]. Expand those groups out until you get individual controls. Each of the three groups has like 8 controls. I just select them all and create a select set, but you ay have a more elegant way of doing it : ) To summarize, it's [jane_rig:jane]>[:jane_controls]>[:jane_face_scuplts]> {[:jane_eyebrows_sculpts], [:jane_eyelids_sculpts], [:jane_mouth_sculpts]} And the controls are in those three groups. Feel free to comment if you have any issues with it! p.s. here's the website of the French workshop I was talking about last night; we're all students here so it's interesting to see what's going on out there. link

Benoit - Assignment 01

Hi guys!
Here is my 3 sec shot for this week.

Jackie- 3 second clip (please play with audio turned down)

Hi guys, here's my 3 second clip; I always wanted to animate someone in concert, so I took this audio of Nick Cave at Coachella and gave it a spin- I liked the scariness to it. This rig has problems, i.e. face/ arms aren't set up right, so I'm calling it a day and moving on. Thanks for looking!

Dana - Week 1 Assignment

Hey everyone, here's my attempt at the week 1 assignment. The first upload was really low res so I've linked to a dropbox posting instead. Thanks!

Jackie- audio clip for this term?

Hi guys, here's my audio clip I want to use for this class. I always like to do a romance theme : P Anyway, this is a bit long (14 secs) so I was thinking of cutting it before or after the first "he doesn't do it for you?" I'm not sure. I'm thinking they can be fishing in the early morning, because there are crickets in the background so it's nighttime and they're outside. I want to recycle my iAnimate girl and monster rigs, but I could come up with something else if need be. Cool, please let me know your thoughts! p.s. thanks to Kevin for getting me out of the dark about contributing to this blog!

Class on April 18: Sub or Skip?

I propose we skip the class next Thursday and make it up later, rather than have a substitute (not that Royce isn't great).  I think this would be better for our continuity of feedback.  What do you guys think?  Comment below, or just email me.

Welcome to Spring 2013 Session!

Hi Class, it was great to meet you all last night!  I've put together this blog where you guys can share your work between classes. I think it would be great if you reviewed each other's work, and I may periodically visit to give notes, too!  I will also use this space for announcements and reminders.  Please start by posting your progress reels if you can!

As a test video post, here is a link to the animation that got me in the door at Pixar:
